You guys might remember Jessica from our webinar in August or her guest post earlier this year. I’m thrilled to invite her back today to chat about learning without overwhelm! There are so many ebooks and ecourses out right now, and it certainly seems like every day someone is launching a new one of the two (or both). I think this post is great for anyone who finds themselves trying to learn a new subject or hobby or for those ecourse / ebook junkies out there!
These days, it’s safe to say that you can learn anything about everything, if you want to. Whatever your blogging or business niggle of the moment, chances are there’s a resource out there tailor-made for you… And a crop of others for problems you never knew you had! With such a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips, it’s easy to get stuck and overwhelmed.
Over the years, I’ve come up with a simple, 3-part system that allows me to get my learning on and rock my blog without losing it. I’m super excited to share it with you, so let’s begin!
Do ONE thing
With all the incredible resources up for grabs, it can be difficult not to give in to our inner magpie alter ego and download or buy them ALL! I, for one, have been known to hoard them like a grubby little Gollum-like character, telling myself that “I’ll get to them soon” and that I’ll be the queen of all things blog-related when I eventually dive in and get my learning on.
Guess what usually happens, though? I either find a shiny, new resource to focus my greedy little mind on (and forget all about my already epic collection gathering dust in a folder somewhere on my hard drive), I get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content at my disposal and do nothing, or I end up doing too many things at the same time and crash and burn.
Luckily, there’s an easy workaround for all three scenarios: do ONE thing at a time. Choose one course, one freebie, one webinar – whatever you feel will give you most value – and concentrate on just that resource for now. Devote yourself to getting everything you can possibly get out of it and above all, commit to ACTING on it (we’ll go into that in the next point).
It may seem like a super simple tip – and it is – but you would be surprised to hear how many of your fellow bloggers and business owners struggle with this (present company included)! Do this and you’ll feel not only less overwhelmed, but also much more efficient in your learning process.
Create a learning process
If you really want to get the most out of your resource, it’s not enough to simply read through it and hope to passively absorb the knowledge like a sponge; you need to put a process in place to really learn all that goodness and, crucially, implement it. Action trumps theory every time and this is especially true for blogging and running an online business.
I’m a huge fan of creating systems for different aspects of my business and educating myself is no different. The way I intake knowledge depends on the format (my process is different for courses and blog articles, for instance), but the gist of it is this:
- Read through the material once to get a feel for it;
- Go through it again and take notes;
- Derive action steps from it and schedule them immediately.
What this process does is 1) it allows me to really absorb the knowledge in the resource through note-taking and 2) it enables me to take action on that knowledge by setting up next steps and putting them in my calendar.
Set up a process that works for you and you’ll see better results than you ever could’ve imagined!
Of course, sometimes having a system in place and working on one thing at a time isn’t enough. What if you don’t know which resource to choose in the first place? What if you can’t decide on a solid action plan to implement what you’ve learned? In these cases, I find that having someone to help you choose the materials that are best adapted to your particular situation and work through them with you really helps.
I’ve worked through online courses with accountability buddies before but coaches are also great allies when the going gets really tough and you don’t know where to start! If you feel like overwhelm is right around the corner and need a little help figuring out what your next step should be, my 60-minute super-targeted power hour session might be right for you. Get in touch, and we’ll have a chat! :)
To conclude, getting your learning on can feel pretty overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Ruthlessly single-task, put a great system in place, don’t be shy to ask for help and you’ll be right on your way to rocking your blog or business!
